Coming Together Posted on 2017-11-06 by David Deines

I haven't been keeping up on my blog here unfortunately, but I have some extra time today so I thought I'd go for it.  I feel like things are starting to come together as I finished my midterm last week and am starting on an ongoing mixing project.  I chose to do The Siege by The Bella Donna Treatment, and I think I may work on a second one for fun as well - not sure if I want to do the metal one or the electronica one.... maybe both?!  I'm really enjoying this new direction in my life and I feel like I am picking up the fundamentals of this field quickly.  There is an endless amount of stuff to learn, but I feel like I already have the basis of knowledge required to be able to absorb the more complex things.

I'm really excited about a new endeavour that has surfaced, which is working as the sound guy for my friend's band.  They do some covers of top 40 hits, classic rock, etc, and I think it is an absolutely perfect opportunity for me to get experience doing live sound mixing.  It's great because they don't seem to take it overly seriously, and I will probably have some space to be creative and learn things.  I went to their practice space yesterday for the first time and I felt like I made a pretty good impression and was able to use the knowledge I've learned here to communicate ideas and actually educate them on a few small things as well.  I plan to look up more information on the gear they have, especially the mixing board, so that I can be as effective as possible when I do my first gig with them on Saturday.  I couldn't ask for a better situation to get started with.

Additionally, I have an upcoming opportunity with the company my brother works for to get some more experience in the field and even make some decent money, too.  It's a sandwich shop called Even Stevens, and they are wanting to do live acoustic shows like 3-4 nights per week.  I just need to find some artists and book them, if I can.  My mentor can probably help me get in contact with some people, and I also may need to go to some open mic nights and things like that.  One of the coolest things about this is that Even Stevens has a really cool business model - for every sandwich they sell, they give one to people in need.  It's a really cool concept, and I think people would be more motivated to do some gigs there because of it.  Also, they were very successful back in Utah and are expanding to Arizona as well as Seattle.  I imagine they could be incredibly popular with the culture here.

Anyways, I need to get to work reading the next chapter and such.  I will try to keep up on this blog, but I have so much to do!

Dave
