The Beginning of a Journey! (Lessons 1&2) 2/21/13 Posted on 2013-02-21 by Zach Morin

Hello world!

I am excited to say this is my first step toward pursuing my passion and living my dream of becoming an audio engineer! I am excited I have finally started classes at The Recording Connection and will do my best to express my experience to you in a fun and entertaining way! I will try my best to add a little something different to each post.

The studio I am learning at is Clear Tracks Studios' located in Clearwater, FL. Just by walking around the studio from my interview I had a few weeks ago I could tell they put a lot of work, effort and time in to the design to make sure it was top of the line. I can already tell that Clear Tracks is one of the best in the Tampa Bay area. I am thrilled to have the chance to be learning in such an awesome and well put together environment. My mentor I will be learning under is Mike Johnson, he is also the head of the studio. I can tell he is very knowledgeable and has a great passion for what he does, which makes me excited each week to go in and learn something new. I am confident I am learning from the best!

The first lesson, Intro to Sound and Hearing, was a great was to dive in and start to get things going. I learned all about amplitude, wavelengths and various other ideas. I also learned that your ears are your most important tool you have when it comes to audio engineering. Mike explained to me how important it was to mix at the recommended volume of 85 dB and why if you mix at a volume too loud or not loud enough you will not be hearing the music properly and it will mess up the quality of the mix.

The second lesson, Studio Design and Monitors, was awesome! I never realized how important a good sounding room was for the outcome of a mix. I learned the difference between sound locks and iso rooms and Mike explained to me why we use bass traps and diffusers and also how important it is to have the right amount of reflection and absorption. I also learned that the way the studio is designed is really not for looks as much as it is for sound quality. Yes, the design looks sleek and modern, but everything is positioned at a particular place for a reason, as I like to say, there is a method to the madness.

Well I appreciate your time and look forward to posting more about my exciting journey in to becoming an audio engineer! Before I go I want to leave you with a video that my dad came across when he was looking up what an audio engineer really does. I think many engineers will get a good laugh out of this one.

Take care and till next time,

Zach Morin
