Midterm Done! Posted on 2016-08-26 by Matthew Tsabetsaye

Hey Everybody!

Today I took my midterm at the studio with my mentor and I did great! I studied a couple nights before and worked on my Single Cycle Sine Wave Project. The Sine Wave Project was really fun and cool. The assignment was to create a 30-60 second song out of a single cycle of a Sine wave. I have made music before but I thought doing it completely from one waveform was almost impossible! So what I did was I used the provided video as a stepping stone and made a C# minor chord from the tone provided then I distorted the chord like crazy with the Pro Tools provided guitar amp plug in. Then I added some reverb to the distorted chord and used the reverb tail to start to create my own snare drum. After some crazy compression, EQing and reverb I was able to get a decent snare drum. From there I repeated the snare drum process to recreate a ride, hi hat, and woodblock type of noise. I also made a sort of 808 kick drum by layering the woodblock and kick drum I made through lots of compression. After building the drums I set out to make the song more melodic so I loaded up the quarter note sine wave patch into the Pro Tools provided sampler Structure Free and created a I-VI-VII chord progression in the key of C# minor. Next I made a melody to go along with the chords that only used 3 notes. I added some delay and reverb to both the chords and melody which gave it a wide sort of spacey feel. The end product resulted in a Hip Hop song that was very chilled out and had sort of an atmospheric vibe. I really enjoyed the project because I had never done anything like it and I was pretty excited with how it came out. I'm really looking forward to getting more into the text book in the coming weeks!
