Yesterday John went into great detail about all the automation options in Pro Tools.  He showed me how to use EQ and volume automation on the master track to give the chorus of a song a lift from the verse.  John had me narrow the pan on the overhead mics on the drums during the verse and make them wide again at the chorus or hook.  He showed me how dropping some low end out of the bass during the verse and bringing it back for the chorus also added to the lift of the songs chorus.  John also had me automate the EQ to give a radio effect to the intro of the song by using high pass and low pass filters.  The last thing he showed me is how to automate reverb and delay on vocals.  It was very helpful to hear the difference between having reverb and delay on the whole time verses just at the ending of certain phrases.  I learned all those extra effects cloud up the mix and the automated way sounds much more professional.
