This was the tracking session for The Family Trucksters. We recorded the whole band first and then went back and recorded guitars and vocals. It was a three piece band made up of drums, bass, and a guitarist/vocalist. John had me patch the drums into the desired pre-amps. He also had me mic the drums and run the cables myself, later he made some minor adjustments. Same basic mic setup I've seen John use: SM57 snare top and first tom, 57A snare bottom, SH44 2 floor toms, 2 NT5's OH, AKG C1000s HH, 2 AKG C414Bs room Mics and finally a Shure Beta52 for the kick drum. On the guitar amp John placed a 57 and a KSM44. For the bass guitar we took a direct signal using John's secret weapon the Avalon Ultra Five Direct and ran that through the LA2A analog compressor. John told me that his favorite 2 mics to use on rock guitar amps are a 57 and a 421. The band tracked 3 songs and all extra guitars and vocals in a little over four hours. They have another session scheduled to do a finally mix.
