First hip hop session.... Posted on 2017-07-14 by Michael Brown

So last nights session at the studio was real dope, twas the first hip hop artist I've had a chance to work with at LowTide. The artist was Saxx, which my mentor has spoken about several times before and I have previewed some of his works before from Jim, dope MC. This session was extra special in the fact that I would get to take a peep at Jim's workflow when doing a hip hop track with said artist. He explained to me how Saxx liked to record and that it should be a short session. Quick punch ins after a 2 bars on each verse, useda skeleton vocal for the hook, then added add libs in one whole take over the entire track.(took notes on this workflow and will probably incorporate into mine). After tracking and a few shots of E&J , Jim started a rough mix and polishing the track. (sounded amazing!) Saxx was very pleased with the overall work and made sure knew it, he was a very down to earth individual and we gto to talking about the culture and past , present and future states of hip hop. (I could talk all day about!) Saxx was so cool that he kept looking for my opinion on the mix and positioning of certain parts of the song which was pretty cool, because I just met him and he was trusting me with his vision. I expressed my opinion on a little but not too much, I didn't want to step on Jim's toes or make the session go any longer than it should but Jim was determined to get it the way he wanted before leaving. So after many listens and a couple handshkes, one photo op, that was a wrap on my irst session with a dope MC at Low Tide. After the session Jim told pme he will send the session to me via dropbox and see what kind of mix I could come up with and could present both to said artist anfd see which one he likes the most. A little surprised but gracious I said "if it;s cool wit u, I'm down!". Super close to the end of this program and Jim is trying to set me up for success,n much love. Till' next session!!!!!!!
