Chapter 17 Automation Posted on 2014-06-10 by Katelyn Smith

  • Pioneer RUPER NEVE gave us the NECAM, the first mixing console to have moving fader automation.
  • READ made in pro tools is an automation mode the means nothing is written, but any previous passes will be played in real time.
  • FLYING FADERS is a type of console automation system that was invented by Martisound and remains popular today.
  • LATCH mode in pro tools is an automation mode that means once a pass is written, the parameter maintains its current position until the write pass is ended.
  • Send Levels in pro tools cannot be automated!
  • Prior to automation, on the fly changes to session parameters were made by= Multiple people changing parameters in real time as a session was being mixed down.
  • TOUCH mode in pro tools is an automation mode that means the parameter being automated returns to its previous position once it has ben written.
  • Both TOUCH and LATCH automation modes do not start writing automation data until a parameter is moved.
  • WRITE mode is an automation mode that starts writing automation once the space bar is pressed and continues to write automation until playback is stopped, at which time this mode automatically switches to latch mode!
  • Automation Playlists are the lanes on the edit window in pro tols that show the user a graph representation of automation that has been written.
  • MIDI and instrument tracks in protools cannot be automated!

This week after my lesson nate was teaching me how to use different types of EQ. He told me to practice and learn the different kinds of EQ and that he would quiz me on it! I liked learning how to make the bass different and switching the sounds to where it could even sound like a old radio playing in the backround of a movie.
