The ocean city boardwalk was recently voted one of the top 10 boardwalks in the nation. It is one of the most popular beach destinations in the northeast and has thousands of visitors every year, both domestic and international. From its eclectic pick of stores and restaurants to pass the time away in, to the wild horses of assateauge island a short drive away, it is easy to see why the location is such a summer hotspot. But what is it like for the people who never leave? The people who call this place their home. What is it about this place that would make someone never want to leave? How would growing up in a place like this shape someone and what kind of effect would it have on them? This film would examine the perspective and the personality of not only the people who call this place home even after the summer ends, but of the city itself that went from bringing its visitors in by train or ferry, to becoming one of the most beloved tourist destinations around.

The city of Ocean City, MD was officially founded in 1875. But before that, it was a getaway for people who wanted to fish and enjoy the natural beauty of the coast. They came by coach or ferry and stayed in one of the few of beach cottages that lined the shore. One by one, more boarding houses began to appear which eventually caught the attention of several influential businessmen of the surrounding Metropolitan areas. One of the first major landmarks that was erected in the area was the Atlantic Hotel in 1875. It was the first major hotel in the area and had more than 400 rooms. Besides the proximity to the ocean, it also offered dancing and billiard rooms for added entertainment. It was the first step in the direction of hospitality and added accommodations for visitors who were wooed to the area by the freedom and luxury of the beach.

By 1881, a railroad line was completed across the Sinepuxent Bay to the shore, which allowed passengers to be brought into town from the Baltimore, Chesapeake, and Atlantic Railroad.

In 1933, mother nature gave Ocean City one of its greatest gifts. It would lead to the area becoming the thriving resort town that we know it as today. But it came in a package that the inhabitants of the city would never have believed anything good could come out of, let alone be something to celebrate. For four days, massive waves, severe rains, and hurricane type winds ravaged the delicate beach town. When the storm finally subsided in the evening hours of August 23rd, the inhabitants were able to survey what damage had been done. One of the most dramatic effects that the storm had on the topography of the land was a new 50 foot wide, eight foot deep inlet at the south end of the town. The powerful waves that pounded the east side of the resort, combined with the massive amount of water that built up in the back bays, converged to cut the inlet and separate the southern end of town from what is now Assateaugue Island. For several years before the storm, there had been many attempts by officials of the area to petition for funding to create a similar inlet. In a matter of a few dark, stormy days, mother nature bypassed the bureaucratic red tape and change the topography herself. The now open seaway to the Ocean helped establish Ocean City as a major fishing port and steadily attracted more and more people for sport fishing.

Following the end of the Second World War, the city experienced some of its most significant developments and changes that led it to becoming the bustling, memorable city it is today. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-tunnel completed both respectively in 1952 and then in 1964, made the area much more accessible to travelers from the Baltimore and Washington metropolitan areas. Cover bands and night life revolving around live music went on the rise making it a popular weekend getaway for the younger generations. With the continual rise in popularity among various demographics, the city shifted into what could be considered what is now known as modern day Ocean City.

In the 1970s, the building boom took off and led to a creation of approximately 15,000 condominium units. No longer were the quaint beach cottages of the early part of the century the norm, but rather towering, bold units that were erected for the vacationers looking to escape their everyday lives and have a good time in the biggest way possible. It completely shifted the aesthetic look and personality of the city.

Ocean City currently extends more than 9 miles from the southern inlet to the Delaware line. There are motels, hotels, shopping centers, residential communities, and condominiums. The boardwalk is on the south end of the city and is the main shopping district and entertainment area of the town. Some of the more popular stores of the Fisher's Caramel Popcorn, Dolle's Salt Water Taffy, the Atlantic Stand, and Dumser's Dairyland. Many people are regulars who vacation in the area annually and have had some of their most memorable moments there.

Person #1 "I've vacationed here every year for the past three summers with my sisters and my parents and it's alot of fun. There's alot of really cool stores to go in and there's alot of fun things to do on the beach. My favorite thing to do is to go to the ice cream shops and get a huge ice cream to eat. The water always feels so good on a really hot day and it's alot of fun to swim in the ocean. I think Ocean City is a great place to come because it's just a really fun environment, there's always alot of activity, and its a family friendly place."

Person #2 " This is my first time visiting OC and i think its great. The boardwalk is absolutely huge and has so many different things to do. There's a bunch of different places where you can go and get fresh seafood. Or if you don't like seafood, there's a ton of other options. The boardwalk food like the fries and the ice cream and the frozen yogurt are pretty great as well. It's just a really fun place to come and get away for a day and do something fun. It's centrally located to many areas so that makes it possible for people from all over.

Person #3 My favorite place to visit here is the Ripley's Believe it or Not Museum because there's alot of crazy things inside. Even though I know most of the stuff isn't real, it's my favorite place because it's so different from any other store on the boardwalk.It has a huge mirror maze, the world's rarest egg, and two headed animals. So even though I like getting salt water taffy from Dolles and shopping in some of the clothing stores, I always make sure I go to Ripley's!

Person #4 " My grandfather actually grew up in Ocean City during World War II. He told us some crazy stories about what happened during those times. I remember one of them was how when he was about 13, he was recruited to stand watch in this make shift look outs made out of stacked sand bags. They were suppose to watch out for any possible enemy planes coming to the coast and they had a phone that was directly connected to coastal defenses. He would get picked up by one of his friends mother before dawn and then get picked up again a couple hours later so he could make it to school. You would never associated something that with a place like this because people come here to get away from stress. It definitely wasn't always like that though.

Person #5 I've lived here my whole life, and don't get my wrong, i know that the tourism in the summer brings in so much revenue and alot of job opportunities especially, for younger people, but sometimes all the extra people in the summer can just be so annoying. There's a longer wait anytime you want to go out anywhere, traffic is ridiculous, and anywhere you go you can be sure to hear a kid or two screaming or crying after their mother just bumped into you with their stroller. There's some fun things about the summer, but I'd take the peace and simplicity of the off season any day over the business of tourist season.

Person #6 I was born and raised in Ocean City and can't really ever see myself leaving because this place is such a part of me. It really is special. I feel like one of the main reasons I'm such an artistic person is because of the surroundings that I grew up in. The ocean and the sand and the natural beauty of the shore really makes you slow down and want to be introspective and think about the finer things in life. I've many times wondered what it would be like to be able to enjoy this area without all the buisness people looking to make a profit or the people who are here just to take what they can for a weekend and get drunk in the process. Alot of people just don't see the more lasting attributes that this place has.
