Lesson 4

This evening we covered microphone types and the applications that are best suited for each type.  We discussed, in detail, the prowimity of microphones in relation to capturing great sound.  One application we exaimened in detail was the Hamond Organ.  The Leslie speaker cabinet creates a unique vibrato effect by using two rotating speaker baffles that spin on a horizontal axis.  Capturing a great and true sound from these cabinets requires specific attention to mic placement.  Poor placement and proximity will yield less than desireable results.  We also went through the mic placements on Dahl's studio drum kit.  Mic proximity on a drum kit is crucial to capturing great tones from all the acoustic pieces as well as the cymbals and limiting the amount of leakage from each piece to another.  Instead of isolating a drum kit in an isolation cage of sorts Dahl uses movable baffles in key positions to contain the sound while for a more live sound to be captured.
