Know your \"Flow\" on the \"Board\" walk Posted on 2013-03-22 by William Hough

11:00am to 12:00pm

Lessons 5 and 6

Today we discussed the signal flow and patch bays in Dream Studios.  Dahl walked me through his assigned isolation rooms and how the signals from each room are routed to the control room patch bay.  Everything on the patch bay is labeled and easy to identify.  Once you get over the initial shock of the mess of cables it becomes much easier to follow.  Dahl explained how the patch bay allows him to route a signal to any number of preamps to allow him to change to a different one if something is not sounding right.  Dahl has a Allen Heath GS 3000 for routing his drums as well as any other source he would like to his DAW.  He also has a Tascam DM-3200 at the desk to use if he so chooses.  Seeing all this gear and how it functions has helped to give me a better understanding of how the control room functions.  I look forward to learning more about how all these pieces come together to make great music!
