Lesson 18

Microphone placement techniques

We got into mic placement in lesson 18. We had gone over it many times before in live sessions, but we focused on stereo setups. I learned about the Blumlein technique and other ways such as spaced pair, x/y, m/s and decca tree. We set up a drum set and after my mentor explained it, he tore the his microphone setup down and had me set it up and record. we experimented with a few different techniques, and studied how they compare and contrast. Also different types of mics to see what different effects we experienced. we did the same with electric guitar and bass amplifiers.
