Connectivity Posted on 2013-11-16 by Devin Zorn

Today we learned connectivity/ more signal flow in the studio using the Patch Bay. It was very daunting to me at first, but after Rick explained it to Sky and I, it was very simple. Using the Fully Normalled bays prevented from double bussing (so you dont accidentally get your guitar on the same track as your snare, etc.) and the half normalled let you send signal to where you want and allowed for you to decide if you didnt want to use an effect later, you can just take it out by removing the top cable, since only the bottom cable completely takes the signal out being half normalled. It is definitely something that i will have to get better at, but it allows me to play with the awesome outboard gear in the studio like the DBX or Urei 1176 and other outboard EQ's/ effects. Other than that, I asked rick about the compressors whether they do Peak or RMS Compression (Because i already have a firm grasp on how to use compression to prevent overages with singers/ compressing to bring out more punch from drums or harmonics and character from guitars and bass, etc.) and i figured out that it depends on how you use them. The 1176 Compressor/ Limiter can do either, if you want RMS compression, use a lower compression ratio and put the input up more, Peak compression would have a higher ratio (12 or 20 or any combination of the 4 buttons on the 1176, because i know thats one of the coolest things about it. You can mix and match the 4 ratios because they aren't knobs like usual and "British Mode" will get it really distorted and driven sounding. But anyways yeah, higher ratio makes it a peak compressor or a limiter) I can't wait to actually get to the point of learning about compressors and EQs! and getting to use the nice outboard compressors, EQs and other effects by patching the audio to them in the patch bay! The course is still very interesting and I am definitely learning a lot so far! the next lesson should be at least a little fun since I can finally touch the nice Mics I have always dreamed about seeing/ using in person, and the lesson on mic placement should be even more exciting! I can hardly wait!

Mic TestsPosted by Devin Zorn on 2014-01-28

01/27/2014 Time In: 12:10  Today, I had brought in one of each kind of MXL Ribbon mic i had bought to compare them to the high quality Royer 121 and Coles 4038 at the studio, as well as tart talking about the EQs that we are getting into in the next lesson... Read More >>
