I came in early so i could be sure that i get to mic up the drum kit myself. We had a 4 piece metal band at the studio recording live and they played in time, but aside from where they put their fingers on the fretboard to play their songs, they didn't know much else about their intstruments, how to really tune them well and especially how to intonate them. Me and Rick got the drum kit setup and sounding in tune then miced up nicely. The bassist was DI'd and the Guitar cabinet was put in the mic closet to get some separation of sound so there wasnt so much bleed into the drum mics. It was sounding great except for the band couldnt get any transitions right. Rick and I took the bassist out to intonate the bass and show him how to do it. his bas was a full quarter step out of tune when fretting the 12th fret... and the guitarist broke a string and began tracking rhythm without letting anybody know. The drummer had been in the band for only a couple weeks. There was no final recordings done that day, only an intro and a rough breakdown transition. Luckily all the band members were very friendly and easy to work with so the only hairpulling was for the out of tune instruments, radio frequencies the guitar amp was picking up and the assignment of wires to their inputs on the board and bussing them to the right channel because there was another drum kit set up in the drum overhang/ booth thing. (I don't know what to call it. It's not a full booth but the overhang makes everything under it completely dead with no reverb. It's really weird and really cool at the same time) it was a pretty decent day even though there was no finished recordings.
