A compressor is used after it passes the threshold, and the sound is made to be louder in the mixing process. If the compressor does not reach the threshold it is known as a gate. A gate is commonly known to be used on drums because the drums are the loudest instrument when recording studio or live sound. The ratio is actually the amount of volume being applied to the sound. A infinite to 1 ratio is known as a clip limiter, because it limits the sound from clipping at the top of the wave. A 10 to 1 ratio would only be known as a limiter because it is not clipping the signal. An expander and a gate are relativley similar, but a gate cannot make a signal louder. The expander can be used to increase or decrease the volume of a sound and is commonly known as the opposite of a compressor.
