1) Date of Session: June 18th, 2014

2) Time in: 1:00 PM

3) Time out: 3:00 PM

4) Lesson #: 18

Today Tara brought someone in to play the drums for me so that I can learn more set up for the drum and how to edit drum clips. Once again we don’t have all the different kinds of mics to do a full set up so we used what we had. I set up the basics, most of the mics were either next to or right above what we were miking as close as it could be because we didn’t have a proper set up and we couldn’t fit to many mic stands into the booth but we still made it work with what we had.

After recording a few takes of the drums really quick Tara started teaching me how to edit each section. First we needed to do strip silencing. Parts of the drums that need this are: the kick, snare, all toms (Left, Right, Floor) and sometimes high hat.

How to get to strip silence:

* Edit -> Strip silence

o Clip start pad -> 19 msec

o Zero strip threshold, min strip duration

o Strip threshold; have gray bar by all the big important waves

o Clip end pad, the end of waves

o Click 'strip'

* When doing one track, strip whole track till the end before moving onto the next track

**Must click or highlight track or you won't be able to see the lines.

*!! Overhead's you DON’T STRIP !!*

Then we move onto beat detective:

* Event -> Beat detective

o Analyze

o Clip separation

o Move 'sensitivity' so there is a pink line at the beginning of every wave

o Click 'separate'

Make sure 'Tab to transients' is highlighted.

* Make sure all tracks are grouped other

o Tab

o Command + 'E'

* Continue down for all tracks.

These notes are something I'd like to have to keep as reference in the case that I ever forget how to do them. It was a long process and we only got to do a few. I found that you need to be very patient when doing this and it's easier for me to do it in sections for each take than the whole track at once so I can make sure I wasn’t missing anything. At first I wasn’t sure what I was listening for because I am so used to hearing all the different parts of the drum together but being able to listen part by part to clean it up in sound was a really nice learning experience. Hope we do this more often so that I can practice some more.
