Week 18 Blog Posted on 2015-06-12 by Andrew Jordan

This week my mentor and I only met at the studio on one day rather than two.

I did some recording for a rapper, and I learned that you should make sure you have the mic lines and levels set before recording a vocal track. Before bouncing a track, be sure to trim portions of vocal recordings that contain unwanted background noise (typically the beginning of the tracks are what will most need to be trimmed, as the first four bars tend to be the intro of the beat before it goes into the louder verse/hook section, so the background noise is much more noticeable). Additionally, when trimming a vocal track, you should probably add an inaudible, very small fade in and/or fade out on the beginning and end of each edited portion. The reason for this is because doing so will likely prevent a popping sound at the start and end of the edits that may somewhat disrupt the listener's experience. Lastly, and most importantly, you should expect technical difficulties and learn how to prepare for them, as anything can go wrong.
