Recap of the Masters Program at Maximus Studios Posted on 2018-06-11 by Jose Castrejon

Whats up ladies and gents, my name is Jose Castrejon and for the last 9 months I was enrolled in the Masters Recording Engineering Program at Maximus Music Record Studios located in Charlotte, NC. These past couple of months have been one of the best and most unique experiences of my life. I learned more than I expected from Ira Parker and former Student Daniel Katan who is now an engineer and instructor at the studio. The guys there constantly push you to be better you than the day before. They teach you new things everyday. The best part was the Ira gives you the opportunity to intern while you're enrolled in program. So aside from the hands on training you get and the physical studio being your class room, you get to assist in sessions and see how the show is ran behind the scenes, you get to watch your instructor do the things they show you in class. And being there watching them engineer and mix is one of the best experiences a student can have. Another thing that really stuck with me is that the techniques and tips that you get told in class I constantly applied due to the fact that I got the chance to record a two-track with a rap artist and a Mexican Band. Not the big bands though with the clarinets, trumpets, trombones, you get what im saying; but a Corridos band with an accordian, bass guitar, twelve string guitar, and two vocalists. Unfortunatly I never got the chance to finish recording with the band because they were late the majority of the time and they did not take advantage of the free studio time they were provided. Aside from all that learning how to mic up an actual accordian, something I had been wanting to learn for a while was amazing. Putting the Sony C800G on it and running through an LA2A and an MC77 was crazy! The sound was just extroardinary. To sum it all up I had the opportunity to learn how to record one of my favorite Mexican Music genres and one of the fastes growing genres with this program. I also have to say that being there I learned not just things to apply to recording and producing music but life lessons. All I want to say for future students, if the opportunities are there and you dont take them thats your loss. You have several opportunities here with this school to not only get your foot in the door with the industry but to network with people just like you. That are passionate about music and want to make a living off of this. Take the opportunities, learn as much as you can, try to be at the studio as much as you can, help around; cauce gaining your mentors trust is one of the best things life can hand you.
