First Day in the Studio Posted on 2012-05-03 by Chris Jarvis

Today I sat in on my mentor putting some final touches on mixing down a track while the singer was there. One thing I realized is an engineers first priority inst his own taste and ears, its the artists. I watched and followed along with what my mentor was doing in the mix and how he communicated with the artist on how loud or what take to use for the song. After about an hour he was done with the rough mix and burned it for the artist. I chatted with the artist while he was emailing it to him upstairs about the music scene today. Next my mentor went over the lesson and quiz and answered the couple questions I had. He then demonstrated the basics of setting up and organizing your files and folders for bands that come in, and how to set up a template and prepare for sessions. It was great to already know most of what he was talking about and to be able to understand what he was doing while he was mixing from my personal experience with DAW's. All around it was a great first day and I cant wait to get back in the studio!
