Lesson 19 Posted on 2014-06-08 by Chase Jowell

In this lesson, we went over the different aspects of mastering. Jeff explained that he hasn't done much mastering in the past simply because it's almost an entirely different field than being a mix engineer. Mastering engineers are the guys who make sure the album and all of the songs sound like they are a cohesive piece, a single unit, rather than just a collection of works that happen to be on the same album. The one thing that Jeff said that stuck with me was that one of the things that he focuses on and registers with people is the vocal level. If the vocal level is at mostly the same level and seems like it was recorded in the same space throughout the album, then people will register it as being much more cohesive. I thought he was spot on.
