Mix Madness Posted on 2012-05-10 by John Polizzi

Working on mixes will drive anyone a bit crazy. The mad scientist inside of you rears his ugly head and floods your mind with ways to make whatever project your working on sound incredible. Before you know it, hours have passed, knobs have been turned, and levels have been adjusted, leaving you with a final product that sounds so familiar to your original rough mix, but with so much depth of field that it's an entirely different animal altogether. This has been the story of my life for the past few days, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

You see, I've been mixing a few songs for a few different projects, each entirely different from the last. One has been a drum track (grind/crust punk) for one of my own band's songs, in which the triggering and EQ have posed quite the challenge. Another comes in the form of a fellow apprentices song, which is significantly calmer, but just as lush and full sounding as it could be. As you can surely imagine, the others are just as different from one another as these two are.

Truth be told, where as all this mixing could have blended together and become an insurmountable amount of work, I'm finding it easier and easier to dial songs in, leaving them at a point where I feel satisfied with what I've done. I've already come further than I ever thought I could in terms of growing my skill and mixing on my own, and I have no intentions of every stopping to grow. I look forward to uploading some of the finished material soon, so stay tuned!
