Koby Parks - April Fools Day, 2016
This chapter mainly covered what I've been experiencing in recording sessions week by week and touching stuff I've been doing on my own for while. Tracking recordings isn't really super new to me, but we mainly focused on organization of studio plot mapping, inputs in the studio, and where and how instruments are supposed to be connected. Since I'd already been helping out on setting up sessions, miking drums and instruments, we did some extra work (mainly on my own). Alex had me draw out a diagram of the studio and gave me several different senarios of bands coming in to record, and where to place them if they wanted to do live tracking sessions or overdub sessions. He also had me create an input map and different scenarios of different styles and pieces of bands coming into the studio. I had to list instruments being tracked, what preamp was going to be used for that instrument, which mic was being used, and which number of mic inputs I'd be using per mic. All instruments and equipment had to be instruments from his studio. Needless to say it was awesome to do this because it will better prepare me for future planning when artists come in to record for session. We also touched on getting microphones in and out of phase to find the best quality of sound while using two or more microphones. Alex had a pretty busy week this past week, therefore we couldn't get the studio time in today for another session (It was moved to a later date). But no worries. It's been giving me more time to do some more self-education, and practice tracking demos on my own with the equipment I already own. However, I'm stoked to be coming up on the second half of this course because I feel I'll really start to be able to get involed with helping out more around the studio during sessions as for the first ones, where I was just shadowing and watching everything. More updates coming soon so stay tuned!
