I would like to talk a little bit about an up and coming genre of metal known as Djent. Djent is what some of the more modern metal bands of today are incorporating into their sound. It is a mix of heavy hardcore metal grooves and progressive changes in timing, I for one am a fan of the new scene it is bringing up. Some of the djent band I have heard on youtube are indipendent musicians. That means no labe,l no managers, and little fame.
It all starts with the use of an added 7th or 8th string on your guitar depending on how low you want your tuning to be. Some of the 8 string users have proven to be the best. Th drummer uses a handful of polyrhythms in his technique to go along with the more heavy esscense of the guitar. The bass is cranked way up and is aided by the use of bass booms. A little trick known to be used mostly in hip hop. This makes the low end of the music sound HEAVY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Vocals are rarely used in the genre because of the major emphasis on the guitar. It is better this way to me because some of the vocals at times just do not go with the music. Extreme leads dominate in this genre of music. A more ambient approach is taken when it comes to leads giving a lot of songs a sort of dessonant feel. The ambience and dessonance make up for the lack of vocals. Make a judgement on the genre his is one of the better videos I have seen for the genre. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzVrexZgeGU
Being a metalhead and looking for the next big thing myself I am always open to hearing new material from both the professional and the underground scene. I wasnt the biggest fan of the preceeding genre of metal which was Deathcore. When that scene came out I was more into the metalcore scene and I couldnt get into deathcore. I am certain that we are going to get some big names coming from the djent scene. So go out and give them a listen and support local music .
