Lesson 8

This session was quite fun. Ernie started me off miking his drum kit. Nice simple kit, kick, snare, high-hat, two high toms, floor tom, small crash, large crash, and a ride. My little brothers first drum kit was very similar, but the one he plays on now is a bit more elaborate. He said that he felt confident that I knew how to mic the kit, I just needed to perfect my technique. He showed the little adjustments, here and there that I needed to work on. Practice, practice. Ernie had me wire everything, all the way through the patch bay, then break it down and clean up.

Then we dove into ProTools, we went through opening a new session, to how many tracks I would need, how to bus over to masters for each group, different inputs, templates, quick key commands, file structure, and back redundance. He told me it was a good idea to copy the set up, when starting a new song, so that all the setups for the previous session are the same and you can add or subtract tracks and adjustments where you needed to. I can't wait till I get my copy of ProTools so I can practice. I just need to remember, I have a PC and he uses a Mac. The cool part is I will have to learn them both at the same time. I won't lie, I'm a bit nervous, but excited at the same time. I also got to sit in on and editing session after our lesson.
