Lesson 12

We are covering EQ's today, something I'm quite familiar with being that I used them most days at work, cause someone like to mess with the settings. I've come across a hand full of different types, starting with your typical 3 band that most car stereos have, all the way to a 32 band. Another was a self tuning one, it was pretty cool, I would hold it's mic in various points in the bar and it would EQ itself, so there was not feedback problems. Also a parametric digital EQ on an A&H DL1000 Digital console, back then it was a little confusing to begin with, but the more I learn about it the easier it was to use. Currently using something like the Behringer Ultragraph Pro FBQ 1502, but it's an older model.

Ernie showed me the rest of what I did not know about EQ's. How to understand Shelving, pass filters, and notch filters, Q, etc., and some uses for them. He said that everyone has their own way of using EQ's, and it's developed over time. Ernie prefers to use very little EQ, cause if it's recorded right the use of an EQ should be minimal. He even showed me an example of using an EQ insert, before and after the rest of the plugins. I though it was very cool, and he said he would show me more about it, later on. He also explained that, the amount of EQ used can also be a result of the musican, and/or the producer. I guess it come down to, who's paying the bill.
