I used to have an ampeg half stack bass amp and it has a graphic equalizer on it. I never fully understood what the point of it was until now. Eq cuts or hightens certain frequencys to give the sound a more refined sound. For example you can cut the lows on a vocal, cut the highs on a bass drum, or adjust mids on an acoustic guitar. It is very important for sound design and bleeds over into mixing. If your mix sounds a little fuzzy a good place to start is in eq to balance out conflicting frequencies.
