If chapter 14 has taught me anything it is that compression can do wonders with a live recording. When something is recorded live there can be a lot of dynamic range. Sometime's you want that, but often times you need compression to give the signal a more consistent level. Compression is very useful on vocals when they are peiced together from different takes, or for a bass line. There are obviously different dynamic signal processing but compression is the easiest and most common form. Gate's are interesting because i always wondered how drum microphones didn't pick up insane amounts of ambient noise from other drums. It turns out gates are commonly used for things such as that. A gate won't receive the mic signal unless it exceeds a certain loudness.
