Hey guys whats up this past week I received some tracks from a great pop punk band by the name of Actions. I followed the standard procedure and downloaded the multi-tracks created files got everything organized so I can swiftly browse through the files and locate everything with ease. So upon completion of the downloads I head over to my computer open up a blank session I’m getting everything ready, I personally like to estimate how many aux tracks I’ll need for effects so I created 6 right off the top assigned them their busses. Three of the six are automatically assigned for reverbs I like to have a track titled “Room Verb” I use this on my drums and feed a little bit of every other instrument that needs reverb into it I do so because if you go crazy with reverbs you tend to get an unnatural sounding mix this kind of keeps everything in one room, although there is times where a different tracks call for a different reverbs thats fine just don’t go overboard with it. So anyway I import my tracks and get all my separate my drums into one group, my guitars into another group, and so on. Well now it’s time for mixing so I solo my drums and everything is a mess I get everything balanced at a comfortable volume now I start working on the kick I solo the track and all I have is a tick!!! I was thinking to myself what the hell is going on here so I press forward and go through all the tracks everything is fine so I go back to the kick and think this must be triggered… Well every time I’ve worked on triggered tracks they write it into an audio file, well this time there is no audio file just this pestering little click. I started freaking out but then remembered this hip-hop song I did a while back where the kick needed more boom and I recall in a lesson hearing about side chaining to create an 808 big kick. Now I’m well on my way I create a new track run a signal generator find a nice frequency around 60-70 Hz is what I liked, opened up a gate fed my trigger track into the side chain and now everything is falling into place. I had never even considered something like this becoming a problem I’m just happy I was able to quickly find a solution. I guess it’s true we always learn something new with every track we mix!!
