Week 1 - Chapter 1: Sound and Hearing Posted on 2017-02-21 by James Boucher

This week I began my studies with the Recording Connection! I am excited to be in the studio working one on one with Larry Goetz, the owner of The Lair Recording Studio in Los Angeles, California. I spent two days this week in the studio assiting another engineer on two live recordings and music video shoots! The first day I assisted Nick, another student with the Recording Connection, setting up the room for a band called, The Aces (Red Bull Records). Though I was unable to stay for the live recording and shoot of the music video, it was a very great way to break into my humble beginnings as an apprentice audio engineer/music producer! Later in the week I was able to get my hands even more involved by assisting Nick with a second session. I was able to run wires to and from the connectors leading to the main soundboard and observed Nick as he set the Patch Bay up for the session. The artist recording was Shea Diamond, and what a great voice she has! She recorded two of her songs, one being her single I Am Her which is on iTunes. She also had a production team there shooting a live acoustic video rendition of her song(s) followed by an interview where she explained how her purpose for writing I Am Her is to help send a message of hope to individuals whom may be dealing with an inability to find self love for themselves based on whatever situation they may be going through. After spending 10 years in jail she found her purpose and was able to comfortable come out as a transexual woman, proud and finally happy. Her message was beautiful and well worded. The day after I met with Larry for my first one on one lesson about Sound and Hearing. He shared a lot of valuable information regarding acoustics of a room, the difference between sound treatment and sound proofing, the reason why instruments are made out of wood and how the size determines the overall balance of an instrument (bigger equals more bass, smaller equals brighter). There was a lot of great information to learn and I'm excited for this coming week!
