During our 9th lesson on Friday 9/8, Larry and I talked about:
-Do a google search for stems or ISO tracks or royalty-free sounds, to have material to work with.
-Splice.com
-Looperman.com
-Reddit – drum samples
-A stem is a combo of instruments, comes from another mix session.
-When miking an orchestra with many pieces, it’s hard to set up baffles, might have to live without them.
-Decca tree works great for orchestra. Larry also uses spot mics, but even then there’s still mic bleed.
-The weight of instruments = how loud vs other instruments in the room. For example, usually there are 2 violins per cello to balance out the weight.
-It’s good to have some imperfect sounds in a project…they can act like glue and hold all the other elements together.
-Using the same effects on all tracks can also help blend sounds.
-Beatles were the first to use compression as a tool.
-Track bounce is from back when you would run out of tape on one machine, so you would have to bounce all tracks from that machine to a single track on another machine.
-A 3/4 time signature is a waltz. It’s 3 beats per measure. “1-2-3” “1-2-3” “1-2-3”
-Dave Brubeck “Take Five” is 5 beats/measure.
-Pink Floyd “Money” is both 7/4 and 7/8
-Allman Brothers “Whipping Post” has 3 time signatures
-The Tempo is found in the MIDI window.
-The advanced class discusses elastic audio, changing the tempo (turn clock to ticks) for equipment with different tempos.
-Hold CMD while in grid mode to use slip mode.
*Ozone 5 is an awesome mastering plugin, really puts the polish on a session
