22nd Studio Lesson 3-29-18 Posted on 2018-05-01 by Bill Sloyer

During our 22nd lesson on Thursday, 3/29, Larry and I talked about:

-Larry mentioned that he splits up vocal tracks instead of automating everything.

-Larry automates reverb.

-If I send a mix to another engineer, keep my settings (volume, panning, etc), don’t reset.  Larry gets mixes that have been reset.  It doesn’t make sense.  As an engineer, we want to know what the client had in mind, so we can improve on it, not start from scratch.

-Also when sending a mix, MAKE A COPY FIRST.  Then check to see what program the person on the receiving end has, and if they don’t have a program that’s compatible with your effects/plugins, then you need to (create 2 tracks?), and freeze/render your tracks to save effects.  Don’t render compressors/EQ.

-In the copy, you are sending, you should also clean up the playlists that aren’t needed.  Click the down arrow next to the track name in the edit window and “delete unused.”

-Another pointer when sending is to do a screen capture so the other party can see all the settings you are using.

-TURN OFF MASTER FADER PLUGINS WHEN BOUNCING

-Always BOUNCE WITH REVERB…if you have reverb on the track.

-If you want to EXPORT A CLIP AS A WAV FILE, first CONSOLIDATE, then hit CMD+Shift+K.

-Always mark the tempo.

-Other option (depending on who you’re sending it to) is to EXPORT to an OMF or AAF, which will open up in Ableton and Logic.  BUT, YOU WILL LOSE YOUR VOLUME, PANNING, AND PLUGINS!
