13th Studio Lesson 10-30-17 Posted on 2017-11-06 by Bill Sloyer

During our 13th lesson on Monday 10/30, Larry and I talked about:

-If vocals are not perfectly in time, you can pan all of them to the middle so it’s not so obvious.

-With effects, always try different volumes.

-You can hear if something is out of tune better at a low volume vs a high volume.

-You can check your reverb by listening on 2 different systems.

-ALWAYS PUT A LIMITER ON A MIX GOING TO A CLIENT.  Makes it louder/brings the lows up.

-A track will be accepted by iTunes as long as it’s 16 bit and 44.1K sample rate, however Larry always uses 24 bit no matter what sample rate he chooses (whether it’s 44.1k or 48k).

-PASSIVE EQ:  turn one level up, it actually just brings the gain down on everything else.

-ACTIVE EQ:  has an amp on the back end for makeup gain.

-Modern EQs are just emulators/chips.

-Larry likes to do little adjustments with multiple EQs rather than a major change with one EQ.

-LARRY always puts a COMPRESSOR BEFORE an EQ in PRO TOOLS.  You don’t want a compressor compressing the EQ.

-Compressor grabs the loudest parts and brings them down.

-Neve EQs are broader, APIs are more narrow (Larry prefers API)

-Sontec – made the first EQ that overlaps frequencies

-Expression pedal – audio doesn’t go through it.  The pedal controls a circuit, not the guitar.
