During our 19th lesson on Tuesday, 1/23, Larry and I talked about:
-Larry makes 2 separate tracks for a piano instead of doing a single stereo track, so he can control the levels separately.
-A whole note is also called a goose egg or a diamond.
-AUTO-TUNE
-A monophonic plugin
-Works OVER the audio… an audio overlay (EQs are the same)
-Larry uses it on backup vocals all the time
-Larry has Auto-Tune EVO
-Larry doesn’t use the vibrato function
-Larry suggests that if you are using the program, AT as much as you can and if there are a few spots where it’s too much, just cut/paste/modify.
-AT in real time is not a good way to work with the plugin
-Better to bus to a new track if there are multiple vox tracks w/the same voice since it uses a lot of processor speed
-To properly use AT, you must know what key/scale you’re in. (Might have to ask the person playing the instrument) since there’s no easy way to find the key, (although some programs will do it for you).
-Can set it for:
--Major
--Minor
--Chromatic = every note. Larry doesn’t use much. Might really only work for a good singer.
(*4 basic types of singers: soprano, alto, tenor, bass)
-Another program similar to Auto-Tune is Melodyne, which is also an overlay program.
--Might loose settings when you upgrade to a new version.
--Needs to be render to the audio track.
*8VA = octave higher
*8VB = octave lower
http://dictionary.onmusic.org/terms/17-8va
-1/3 and 1/5 notes are the 2 most common notes used for harmony. (look at a piano)
*Scoop: A scoop is a vocal technique in which the vocalist sings a note just a little below the desired pitch right before sliding up to it. This is different than a waver or vibrato in that the note is only bent once. Notable singers who use the vocal scoop technique in their singing include Adele, Christina Aguilera and John Legend.
*Cents: Musical intervals are often expressed in cents, a unit of pitch based upon the equal tempered octave such that one equal tempered semitone is equal to 100 cents.
Automation:
-CMD + 4(10-key) = shows what’s being automated, and can suspend
-Larry prefers touch mode
-Can cut/paste automation data. Also, see “cut special” options in edit drop down menu.
Clip Gain:
-Larry doesn’t use when compressing. But another option is to clip gain down so signal doesn’t hit a compressor as hard. Automating the volume is a backup, too.
Strip Silence:
-Good for vocals
-Try on toms
