During our 21st lesson on Tuesday, 3/13, Larry and I talked about:
*Check out Nail the Mix website (although Larry says the recordings are pretty solid, so it’s not as much of a challenge).
*Check out Pensado’s Place
-MASTERING IS DONE WTH EQ, COMPRESSON, AND LIMITING.
-Put limiter (like Maxim) on the final track to make it louder. Fast release = pump sound.
Aim for:
-Attenuation of -3dB
-Ceiling around 0.3db
(If one element gets louder or softer, the mix isn’t balanced correctly.)
*Too much limiting flattens a mix.
-Different mastering is done for CDs (more dynamic range, 30-40 more dB), vinyl (has noise from master tape), and a radio mix, which needs high compression.
-More elaborate mastering plugins are better for bad mixes.
-One recommended mastering suite is T-RackS
-Splice.com has Ozone 8 and many others for rent or rent-to-own (such as Sausage Fattener, which Larry uses).
-Multiband compression (aka “fab fliter”) pulls down frequencies when there are hits at specific moments.
*TRY THE DE-ESSER FOR HIGH HAT BLEED. (Larry’s trick)
-STEMS are groups in instruments on one track. When someone does a remix, they use stems so that they can have only specific instruments (or vocals).
-If you have an 808 bass, it should follow the melody…it should be in sync w/the kick.
*REVERSE EFFECT – in Audiosuite – reversed selected region.
