Lesson 2 Studio Design and Monitors Posted on 2013-03-14 by Jarvis Hollowell

I walked into a perfect storm of raining percussion, thundering organs running for cover around the tempo and the guitars playing tag with bass.  I sat quietly as the storm filled the studio.  My ears treaded and back stroked through the mixing session orchestrated by an engineer named Andrew.  My mentor Will Gilbert assisted Andrew through the storm.  As the storm printed in pro tools down stairs Will and i headed up stairs to a project room to discuss studio design and monitors.  Every 90 degree angle in the room was tattooed with a type of wall stud or baffle to stop the music from bouncing off the flat surface Will explained.  We took a tour of every room and Will explained how the entire floor was floated.  Space between the concrete for to enhance lower frequencies such as the drum kick and bass guitar.  He then explained why the glass and walls aren't built in straight lines.  The design and acoustics in the studio all have the purpose of enhancing the emotions of the music played.  No dead music allowed.  Stay Fo!
