Lesson 4 Microphone Basics Design and Uses Posted on 2013-03-21 by Jarvis Hollowell

Lesson 4/ March 13, 2013/ 5 to 7 pm

Lesson 4 is my favorite lesson thus far,  My mentor Will is to microphones as Merlin is to King Author's round table.  Music is king and every knight around the table fights for the king.  Sir Shure SM57 dynamic microphone is the most common knight used in the studio because when other instruments in the war of sounds are battling at the same time its cardioid pattern absorbs the fight of the instrument best.  The biggest beast in the war of sounds is the fire breathing drum set in which multiple knights have to work together to capture the beast.  Will also works his magic when sending Sir Yamaha Sub Kick into battle.  The cardioid mic captures the low frequencies the best.  To capture the entire fire breathing beast Merlin uses two AKG4-14 microphones for overhead recording.  the overhead microphones have switches that change the polar pattern even though cardioid is the prefered pattern.  Sir Shure SM57 is always used for the snare drum.  The most common knight used for my favorite instrument the voice is the condenser mic in the iso-booth which is a separate battle in its own right.  Sir D12, Sir U87, Sir Royer 121 and Sir MD421 are all powerful knights Merlin uses in the war of sounds.

The war of sounds is never over.  With every artist there is a new war.  I'm proud to walk the castle walls of the American Recording Studio as an apprentice under the Grand Wizard Will.  Merlin and the other engineers are winning the war of sounds daily.  Stay Fo!
