At the end of chapter six, with a better understanding of microphones and microphone placement, on February 3 I helped my mentor with the recording of a organ cocert at the Church Steet United Methodist Church in downtown Knoxville, Tn. The featured organist was Bradley Hunter Welch. Bradley holds the Doctor of Musical Arts, Master of Musical Arts, Master of Music degrees and the Artist Diploma from Yale University. He also holds the Bachelor of Music degree from Baylor University. Dr. Welch has performed worldwide performing in Europe as well as the United States. When first arriving at the church we had the oppurtunity to listen to him rehearse. Moving around the church we found the desired location, to which we placed the mid-side. microphone, a Neumann KM 83 and a Sennheiser MKH 30. It was a challenging placement by the layout of the church and the direction of the pipes in relation to the audience and the seating, also there were pipes in the front as well as having remote pipes being played in the rear. The recording was done with a Sound Devices 744T digital recorder. The sample rate was 44.1 with a 24 bit depth on one track in a polyphonic wave file. A great experience once again!
