So I'm collaborationg my first and my second day at the studio, along with thoughts on Chapter 1.
My first day basically consisted of my mentor and I just kind of discussing everything and how we were going to go about it all. We talked about what my initial goal is in all of this. ( which is to learn everything I possibly can about anything that has to do with music; be it me aspiring to be an artist myself, producing for other musicians, having my own studio etc. ) My mentor, Scott plays in a band himself so I listened to some of their stuff and he listened to some of my stuff. Kind of normal first day chit chat persay. Actually, a lady came by to look at the studio while I was there. We started talking and oddly enough realized we had a lot of mutual friends in the music world, down to the point that we have songs that have beats both done by the same guy. So it's always cool to make new connections. But basically that's day one summed up into a paragraph.
Moving on- My second day I walked into a session Scott was doing with the guitarist from his band The Bo Keys. So I had the chance to just kind of sit and observe what goes into laying certain instrumental parts over a track. They were recording with a vintage tape deck, which I now see is wayyyy more difficult than using the more common methods used in today's world. But it was a pretty cool thing to see in action and learn a few little thing about. Mainly we talked about watching the meters and keeping them at somewhat of a balance so that there's no sound of distortion. After a few hours, the guitarist finished up and left and we spent a decent amount of time attempting to get Protools to work on my computer ( which still hasn't been figured out heh I think due to the fact I have Windows 8). I made sure he had my quiz over the first chapter but we kind of ran out of time, so we didn't have a chance to really discuss it. So keeping with the topic of the chapter, it was interesting and dealt with a lot of basic things that you must be able to apply to being an audio engineer. I'd seen most of these words playing around with some software but never really truly knew what they meant exactly. I definitely have a better understanding though of what a lot of these things mean and see why it's a must that you do. I scored 95% on my quiz so ... yeah yay me! Anyway, I'll close with that. Until next time!
Here's a quick pic I snapped of the mixing room:
