During the past couple of months at the studio, we have had many opportunities to use different placements for the microphones to get certain sounds or effects. We usually do an XY stereo pair on a guitar to get both the notes & the plucking sound. We also do distant mike placements when we have someone singing to create our own "reverb". We do the ORTF placement when we have multiple people chatting in the room for a commercial, etc.
By the time we got to this chapter, everything was fairly familiar. Now it seems instinctive to me to do proper microphone placement just by reading the schedule of what we have to do recording wise throughout the day. It has come to the point where I even arrive to the studio before Stephen to do a set up and test, so by the time he arrives, everything is set and ready, and he has time to do administrative work before our day begins.
