Lesson One 4/9/13 Posted on 2013-04-16 by Matthew Furci

Lesson 1 at Studio du Chateau was really interesting. Stephen (mentor) and definitely went to the extreme to make sure the material was in my brain. We went through the workbook paragraph by paragraph - and then he questioned me one what we just read. We discuss the "ripple effect" (example of rock hitting the water) and how it correlated with sound. We discussed the Inverse square law, periodic, frequency, hertz, wavelength, phase, velocity speed, and more. A fascinating topic that we discussed about was "Imagining". He showed me that sound travels with width, height, and depth, and I got to see first hand how manipulating any of the above changed the tone and "power" of the sound.

The interesting think however was not the lesson itself, but the week before that. I was able to go into the studio for 3 days of internship work where he actually showed me during a live recording with an artist what Phasing looks like. Not only that, we looked through pro-tools, did some waveform editing, etc. He showed me how frequency works during a live recording, and demonstrated delay time between voice and video through latency settings.

This was a very neat meeting which lasted above the one hour mark - we reviewed and demonstrated what the book was explaining for a good hour and 45 minutes. Great first experience, I am super stoked for next weeks lesson.

Just to add, through the studio work that we have been doing, I've been able to participate in an artist recording, actor voice overs, a commercial shoot, as well as setting up the microphones and recording background music for 30 students for their choir. Insane experience!!!!
