Lacquer Cutting Posted on 2018-04-19 by Derek Bradford

This week I took a trip with three other students to Yonkers NY with our mentor Mark. We observed a lacquer cutting for a client of his. This was a unique experience, We were able to see  the process of making a vinyl record in the very beginning stage. From the Master lacquer cutting a "Mother" and "Father" stamps are made which press the actual vinyl that gets sold to fans. When cutting the Lacquer the Mastering engineer must be very precise because he is limited by the physical medium. What makes this process special is that there aren’t many mastering engineers that cut Laquer and to cut properly Very expensive equipment is needed. This job is becoming more in demand as the need for Vinyl record increase in popularity.
