I went to an extra observation where the genies, Chris Griffin, showed us how to mic and mix drums. It was absolutely amazing to watch Chris work because of his seamless attention to detail. We were in the Mezzanine of the Engine Room, so the set up was on the spacious side and gave students an ample opportunity to study multiple different mic's, as well as, the different places they can be effectively used. While mixing, Chris showed us how to use Pro Tools plugins in order to enhance the sound of the Drums, and create what he described as "a hit". We watched as he tweaked the compressions and made slight adjustments using the EQ Plugin. According to Chris, the mic placement is the most important aspect of the recording process because it truly affects you entire mix. If you are able to mic a session properly you wont need to use as much or as many plug ins. Chris said it was important for us to remember that when mixing we don't want to have to fix what you're listening to, but rather, enhance the amazing sound you already have.
