Chapter Fourteen: Dynamic Signal Processing Posted on 2017-03-31 by Sonya Glaessner

During our observation this week, we were in the red room of Dubway with Jeet at our teacher. We were told to build a song from scratch using pro tools. The only available instrument we had to use was a piano, so the majority of the instrument tracks we made using a keyboard and plugins. This chapter focused mostly upon the difference between compression and expansion within the mixing process. I have to say, our time in the studio didn't reflect a lot of what I learned in this chapter simply because we were unable to complete the song and therefor weren't able to begin compressing it. What I will say was interesting was learning how to use plugins when creating instrumental tracks using ProTools. I honestly cannot remember the name of the plugin we used, however, it was one of the ones that was provided to us via Recording Connection. From it, we were able to use the key board to create drums, bass, and strings. I was honestly beautiful to watch as this song emerged from one simplistic background beat. Next observation we will be recording vocals, which will provide us with a great opportunity to utilize compression.
