In this sesssion we discussed the history of microphones and the different types that are most commonly used. I learned about dynamic, condenser and ribbon microphones; how they work and the advantages and disadvantages of each and what microphones are commonly used for which type of instrument, vocal and effect you are looking for. Dynamic microphones such as Shure and Sennheiser; ribbon microphones such as Royer and RCA, and condenser micrphones such as various Neumann models were discussed. I also learned about omnidirectional, different types of cardioid and bi-directional microphones as well as microphone sensitivity and distortion.
