Microphone Placement Posted on 2014-03-21 by Eileen Boschert

In this session I learned about proper microphone selection and placement.  We discussed how frequency response, sensitivity, diaphragm size and polar patterns all need to be considered and of course the overall sound of the microphone.  I learned about distant, close, accent and ambient miking as well as the issues that may occur such as phasing and how to correct them.  We spoke about Spaced pair, X-Y, Blumlein Pair, ORTF, Mid-Side and Decca Tree miking.  How to set up microphones in different spaced pair configurations when recording different kinds of guitars - electric, bass and acoustic and string instruments was discussed.  I also learned about how to mic brass instruments, woodwinds, drum kits and individual pieces such as the snare drum, cymbals and hi-hat as well as keyboards and other percussive instruments like the xylophone and the piano.
