So today we basically set up mics for a drum kit to experiment what they sound like. We set up the kick, snare, floor tom, high tom, cymbal, and hi hat. A mic for each except the hi hat and cymbal. We used two condenser mics for the overheads to capture the sound of them. We also placed another mic on the snare so that there would be one of the top and one on the bottom. We went on the board to check if there were any phasing issues by flipping the phase and listening to what sounds thinner and what sounds like it has more body. There was also ringing coming from the snare so we tuned it and put tissue paper with tape to get rid of it. We each got a turn on the board to change the sound of the drums once we recorded something. I messed around with the filters and tried listening for the differences. I could only notice the difference when I switched all the way but some of them were still very subtle. I know it takes a long time to get your ears trained so I hope I start learning more about it soon.

We spent time in the mezz going over songs an engineer mixed and some techniques he used. For example, he told us to cut back about 20% or so on an effect if we really like it... Read More >>
We were in the mezz and focused on recording on a mic with different polar patterns. We played a song on an iphone and rotated it around the mic changing it from cardiod, hyper cardiod, omnidirectional, and bidirectional... Read More >>
