Equalization was invented to sharpen trans-atlantic telegraph signals. The capacitance of long cables muddles transmission, so a Mr. William Thompson developed the first linear equalizer to remedy this and allow the boops and beeps of Morse Code to be intelligible after travelling the many miles between the United States and Great Britain.
