Compressors detect an incoming signal and have a means of controlling that signal. There are two types of compressor circuits: feed-forward and feed-back. Feed-forward circuits are used to stabilize a signal, while feed-back circuits are used to limit peaks. Psychoacoustic masking is a loud sound covering up other sounds. Guitar and vocals have a similar frequency range. Vocal tracks are compressed in a mix to allow a simultaneous guitar part to be heard.
