Lesson 2 - Getting Into It Now Posted on 2013-04-23 by John Tanico

Dates of Sessions: 4/15-4/16
Time In: 10AM
Time Out: 2PM
Lesson #: 2

Lesson two started out a bit boring to me but by the end of the lesson I understood why studio design and acoustics is such an important part of the recording industry. As the time I spend in the studio increases, more and more pieces of information that I learned after high school keep coming back to me. I get a lot of those "Oh, I remember that." moments in class when Sax asks me a question.

This week I found myself being more vocal and hands on with the lessons and studio sessions. On Monday, we had a producer and rapper come in to record a track. I got the chance to ride up to the studio in the elevator with Phil, the producer. I asked him a lot of questions about mixing tracks and producing beats. He was extremely honest and helpful. Anyone who had any questions for him, he was more than happy to answer to the best of his ability. The rapper in the booth was Big Pat from Connecticut. I was in the side lounge doing my lesson with Sax when he started recording. By the time I came out I was able to hear some of his song before he finished his track. When Big Pat came into the control room he walked right up to me, introduced himself, and asked for my honest opinion on the track since I wasn't in there to hear the whole thing.

The amount of advice and encouraging words everyone has to offer is worth more than any full education, which is why I feel that going with the Recording Connection was a great choice. In my two short weeks at Quad, I already have a pretty good concept of working the main mixing console, just by being able to sit next to whoever is engineering the session. The hands-on time with all the equipment is absolutely amazing.
