Week 13 - Here we go folks... Posted on 2015-10-30 by Nathan Cunningham

"Never stop learning Nathan, I'm still learning even today..."

Hello and welcome to week 13! Oh do I have some news for you!

This past week has been a very exciting and interesting week for sure. Let's just get started with talking about my day in the studio with Boo and hanging out with him...

It was so thrilling to be back in the studio on Monday. I had been kind of down in the dumps with a lack of people to connect with about music here around where I live because I don't have many musically talented friends to be honest but that's okay. So honestly it was very refreshing to be able to be where I was comfortable and have had so many fun times, and continue to have fun times there too of course. Working with Boo English has always been a blast and it continues to be one. I have recent updates about recording specifically. I will be recording a family friend and his band this coming Monday and I have super stoked for sure. I've been told I will basically be heading up the entire project and Boo will be watching me to make sure I'm doing things right, (and probably correcting me if something's not right haha.) and that is absolutely thrilling to do a recording project all by myself in the live working studio. I would assume he's also going to be standing by and watching me as I mix it later on afterwards and making sure it's high quality work for sure. I'm going to be looking into any specific things if need be and research about it, especially since I'm running Studio One 3 and Boo uses Cubase and the school mainly uses Pro Tools. (Which I had found out that doesn't run with Windows 10 right now and I spent 3 hours trying to transfer everything over and get different files and whatnot for nothing. Oh well, it happens) I am really enjoying using Studio One 3 though for the most part even though most places use Pro Tools. It is however very important to be proficient in multiple DAWs if ever needed to go back and forth between different ones. ALSO... Still have that project that I'm working on with someone else but what is setting it back is the baby grand piano is going to be tuned I think in about a week and supposed to know when that is ready and get the piano recorded (I think synth is involved as well if I can remember) and then bring her into the studio for vocals. Guitars were also mentioned and she wants me to do the percussion in the song so I've been working on figuring what would be best for that.

Also some news, I had mentioned car trouble and that is finally been taken care of and I'm super glad about that for sure after several days of having to be shuttled around between work and places by my girlfriend, (embarrassing, I know.) But I'm glad to get that out of the way and once again my little red manly *cough cough* Nissan Versa is back in working order! You can now start clapping... Anyways! I had been painting this rental house with my girlfriend for like a week now and it has finally been finished. Figured out it probably averaged $5 an hour but hey did it once for the future father-in-law you know so it could be a lot worse.

Skipping over a couple of things--I have recently been contacted about being mentioned in an upcoming newsletter with The Recording Connection (which has over 80,000 subscribers--Yes you read that, eight and then four zeros!) and I feel very honored to receive an article being rewritten about me and that is extremely exciting. I will be sure to let you know when I hear about it being made and everything and I will be sharing it with you all and wanting to hear back if you have any comments about it. There is a project that I'm currently engaged on with the school about mixing a song and going through basic mixing skills and learning all of that jazz which I've been over for sure with Boo numerous occasions it feels like it. It says pick one song but I decided to go with all five of them because I've very much interested in knowing and having experience with mixing multiple genres of music so I can be a very well-rounded audio engineer. With that being said though, I hope I will be able to turn those out and share them in the next upcoming weeks as it progresses throughout the lessons with the project.

Closing remarks and comments...

I was on the phone with a guy from the school and I was discussing about jobs and everything in this industry and how people could get a lower entry job and work their way up and eventually get higher in the big studio job. On the other hand, there's how you could get a great paying job but in a smaller studio company and there's not room to move up in it really. I know my decision of what I would go for but what would you do? Is putting hard times and strain on you and your spouse's marriage purposefully for about 3 or so years until you move up worth it or being able to have money to where you're not scraping bottom every month but making enough to support the both of you until she lands a job after her degree in a couple of years? Think about it...

And as always everyone, cheers,

Nathan Cunningham

The brand new  YouTube channel is currently on hold due to lack of equipment so please "bear" with me. (Ha ha, like Aquabear... Yeah anyways.) It should be available in the upcoming months and will be planning on producing vlogs, discussions, personal created music and recorded sessions from the recording studio. I'm really looking forward to sharing this all with you when it is all good to go.
