Chapter 14 Posted on 2014-07-01 by Chris Bullock

Just finished my chapter 14 quiz with a 14/15! This was definitely the hardest lesson so far, there was a lot covered. First it went through the 4 different kinds of dynamic plug-ins; compressors, limiters, expanders, and gates. I've only really understood compressors and limiters up to this point so it was nice having everything explained in this lesson. Then the lesson went over attack, ratio, release, threshold, gain reduction, all the parts of the compressors and other plug-ins. While I understand what each of the different options do, I'm still not completely comfortable with knowing when to have a higher release for instance, or a soft knee to a hard knee. When I say comfortable I mean knowing when to use them in the mix rather then just messing with the option until it sounds good, but I guess that'll come with practice. I'm about to start adding dynamics to "The Siege" which should be good practice since that song needs a lot of work. Only 5 more lessons to go!
